How do allergies affect the body?

Allergies can effect the body in many ways by having a  direct effect on the target organ such as the respiratory system, gastrointestinal system or skin. Allergies also can frequently cause headaches, fatigue and irritability. When you eat a food it does get distributed throughout the body in an allergenic form and can cause allergic reactions in different parts of the body.
Allergies, by definition, are a reaction to the body seeing something as "foreign." Based on this, any part of your body that comes into direct contact with the environment around us or the things we breathe or ingest can cause an allergic reaction. Some symptoms that you can experience from this include dry or itchy skin, hives, runny nose or itchy, red eyes, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, or even swelling of your tongue or throat in more severe reactions. Your doctor can recommend specialized testing to help determine what you may be having a reaction to.

Because there are so many different types of allergies, they can affect the body in a variety of ways that range from merely annoying to life-threatening. Most often, allergies affect the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Your skin may become red, itchy, or covered in a rash or hives, while your eyes may water or become bloodshot. Some allergies may cause a runny nose or sneezing, while others may close your airway and constrict breathing.
