What is Ventolin HFA?

Ventolin HFA is a brand name of the active ingredient albuterol inhalation aerosol. It is an inhaled medication for treatment of asthma and bronchospasm, including exercise or cold induced bronchospasm. Ventolin enlarges the openings of small tubes in the lungs called bronchioles, which helps increase the flow of air into the lungs and make breathing easier. Ventolin HFA is known as a bronchodilator medication, and belongs to a class of drugs called beta-adrenergic receptor agonists, or beta agonists for short. The "HFA" refers to a propellant called hydrofluoroalkane, which is used in place of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) which were banned in 2008 because they are associated with ozone depletion.
