Adrenal tumors can be functional and release hormones. Certain hormones like adrenalline can be released sporadically from the tumor and cause episodic extreme high blood pressue. Other hormones, like aldosterone, can be released and cause a general elevation in blood pressure overtime related to salt and water retention.
