What mental health problems do adults with ADHD commonly experience?

More than half of adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have other mood disorders. Sometimes, the symptoms of mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety, can mimic the behaviors of ADHD. Having ADHD with another mood disorder can make it difficult for a physician to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe effective treatment.

Adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may experience mental health issues that have symptoms similar to ADHD. Having other mental health problems with ADHD makes it difficult to obtain an accurate diagnosis and get effective treatment.

Some mental health problems that often coexist with adult ADHD include adjustment disorders, mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and depression, anxiety disorders, learning disorders, and psychosis.
