Is it important for my child with ADHD to know what's cool at his school?

It's important for your child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to both develop self-reliance and to figure out how to be cool. Your child needs to have the inner strength to be "above the influence," as one recent antidrug campaign says. At the same time, he needs to fit in. Sometimes parents make the mistake of thinking that their child's quest to be cool is a waste of time. While the hierarchies in schools are usually incredibly superficial, it is important for your child to figure out what's cool, what's not, and play the game to some extent. The idea isn't for him to mindlessly follow what's cool, but rather to know what it is at his school. Sometimes the recipe for coolness is to know what is cool and play the game but show that you can still make up your own mind. Kids who are seen as uncool can be those who are clueless about what's cool and also those who try too hard to be cool.
