Are any alternative treatments proven to help ADHD?

Douglas E. Severance, MD
Family Medicine
Many miracle cures and products promise to treat and eliminate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Among the alternative treatments considered by parents are diet manipulation, megavitamins, attention training, visual training, psychotherapy, chiropractic treatments, and treatments for allergies and the whole body. Unfortunately, most of these treatments have not undergone scientific research and may even be dangerous.

The good news is that certain ADHD therapies, including medications and behavioral therapy, may offer real, valuable benefits. However, even these programs shown to be beneficial are not recommended for everyone with ADHD. Children may require additional treatments and interventions, which depend on the child's specific symptoms and needs. There may also be the need for special educational interventions, including tutoring and occupational therapy.
