Why is medical care for acromegaly so difficult?

Diagnosing acromegaly in the first place can be difficult because the symptoms develop gradually and are often not apparent for many years. In fact, acromegaly is such a rare condition that many medical professionals do not immediately recognize the disease. By the time the disease is diagnosed, some amount of irreversible tissue growth has already occurred and other health problems caused by the disease may have already developed.
