Dirt doesn't cause blackheads. This is an old myth about acne, and one that can do some harm. If you are convinced that poor hygiene causes blackheads, you might scrub your skin hard, which can worsen acne. A blackhead, also called a closed comedo (co-may-do), is a form of acne that can occur when skin pores become clogged with dead cells and oil. Over time, a blackhead may become inflamed and turn into a pimple.
