How can wearing a hat worsen my acne?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Wearing a hat may make your acne worse. Hats can be helpful for sun protection when you're out in the sun. But hats and caps can make you sweat, and perspiration can clog pores and make acne worse. Acne is caused by too much sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells clogging pores. Try to avoid anything, including sweating, that clogs your pores. Wash your skin immediately after you sweat. Use mild cleansers and rinse with lukewarm water. Use oil-free products that don't clog pores. Talk to your dermatologist (a doctor who specializes in treating skin, nail, and hair conditions) about other ways to help prevent acne.
