Ramipril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. The ACE inhibitors work by blocking the enzyme that converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a very strong constrictor of blood vessels. Less angiotensin II means less constriction and lower pressure.
