Can I use Mavik if I have a history of kidney disease?

If you have a history of kidney disease, your doctor will be cautious about prescribing Mavik (trandolapril), which treats high blood pressure and improves heart function after a heart attack. He or she may give you a lower dose, and monitor your kidney function closely. If you have a history of kidney disease, Mavik is also more likely to raise the potassium levels in your blood too much, or impair your body's ability to make enough infection-fighting white blood cells.

Your doctor also will monitor your kidney function if you have renal artery stenosis (blocked or narrowed arteries that supply blood to the kidneys). The drug can cause kidney failure in people with this disorder.
