Can I take Prinivil if I am breastfeeding?

If you're breastfeeding, tell your doctor before taking Prinivil (lisinopril). Although it's not known whether Prinivil passes into breast milk, similar medications -- angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for treating high blood pressure and certain heart problems -- have been found in breast milk.

Although Prinivil may harm a nursing infant, drugs that are similar to Prinivil have been found to be safe to take while breastfeeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics. If you choose to breastfeed, your doctor may prescribe one of these drugs as an alternative treatment.
