Can I take Prinivil if I am black?

If you're black, it's likely you can take Prinivil (lisinopril), which is prescribed to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure and to increase the odds of survival after a heart attack. Prinivil is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and can cause ACE-induced angioedema, a condition that can cause breathing or swallowing problems and swelling under the skin. The swelling may affect the face, eyes, lips, tongue, throat, hands, lower legs, ankles and feet. Black people are at greater risk for ACE-induced angioedema. Also, in general, ACE inhibitors are less effective at reducing blood pressure in black people than other groups. Your doctor may prescribe another medication along with Prinivil such as a diuretic to help lower your blood pressure.
