Can a tummy tuck be done before having children?

Stuart A. Linder, MD
Plastic Surgery
Normally a tummy tuck is performed on women whom are finished having children. The rectus muscle (2 abdominal midline muscles) are tightened as part of the surgery. During pregnancy these muscle and the fascial layer are pulled apart laterally. In general, we plastic surgeons prefer the patient to be done having children so that we can tighten these muscles (the rectus sheath) permanently. For massive weight loss patients, a panniculectomy may be performed to remove skin only without tightening the muscles.
