When does sight develop in a fetus?

Dr. Michael Roizen, MD
Internal Medicine
Most of us assume that the womb is dark and mysterious, but the truth is that there might be just enough light coming through to give the fetus some visual stimulation - it typically happens when mom herself is in any kind of bright light.

By seven weeks, the baby has developed cup-shaped structures to hold specific parts of the eye - the retina and lens (which are attached to the baby's brain). And by the fourth month, synapses in the back of the brain start forming, where vision is perceived (called the visual cortex, oddly enough). This continues for a year at the rate of 10 billion new synapses a day. The simple act of seeing demands half the neurons of the brain.
