Dr. Avinger is highly intelligent, kind, caring, and compassionate. Her expertise goes much deeper than just the physical, she is also knowledgeable about the emotional aspects of cancer and how it can affect your symptoms. At each visit she carefully explains the results of your bloodwork, inquires about your symptoms, and addresses any questions and concerns you may have. Always pleasant, she helps give you the courage to keep fighting. I am truly blessed to have her on my team.

- I always wanted to provide health care says Shanetia Avinger Nurse Practitioner at Cancer Treatment Centers of America CTCA Atlanta At CTCA the care we provide empowers patients to be part of the team Although she initially planned to become a doctor Avinger found a better fit with nursing She completed her associate s degree in 2004 which included two oncology rotations followed by a nursing residency in medical oncology She soon began caring for patients undergoing medical and surgical treatments for kidney ailments at a large medical center in South Carolina She continued her training at Kaplan University in Chicago completing a bachelor s degree in Nursing in 2009 During and following this coursework she served as a contract registered nurse and a bone marrow transplant registered nurse both at large regional hospitals in Georgia Avinger provided chemotherapy and biotherapy infusions to bone marrow transplant patients developed treatment plans and educated patients and families on maintaining good health during and after treatment She also joined the nursing staff at a large academic hospital providing care in cardiology the emergency room and for patients undergoing bone marrow transplant Later Avinger worked as a charge and infusion registered nurse for a large healthcare organization Here she became a leader among her colleagues supervising and managing the nursing team while continuing to care for cancer patients She completed a Masters in Nursing in 2014 at Walden University becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner After completing her advanced degree work Avinger served patients undergoing hormone replacement therapy In November 2015 she became a Medical Oncology Nurse Practitioner at CTCA At CTCA Avinger works closely with an attending physician and a multidisciplinary team to help patients maintain their desired quality of life before during and following cancer treatment She also encourages healthy eating exercise and social support One of her goals is to provide patients whatever tools they need to participate fully in treatment and other decisions Avinger is licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Registered Nurse by the Georgia Board of Nursing She is certified in Chemotherapy Biotherapy by the Oncology Nursing Society She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society the American Association of Nurse Practitioners the Georgia Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association When she is not caring for patients Avinger loves being with her husband and their three children Her interests include cross stitching reading drawing painting and spending time with family
