After initial appointments with 3 different organizations, I chose Dr Yates because of his flexibility and care in regards to meeting my needs. I was highly stressed about the surgery and I wanted to avoid general anesthesia. Dr. Yates was the only doctor who would consider this over laparoscopic. He was confident in either choice and allowed me to decide. I’m still unsure why other doctors just disregarded my concerns about laparoscopic surgery. My appointment was comfortable as it could be. I was told to schedule when I was ready and he would be there for me even if I chose open inguinal surgery. My surgery was May 2023. The Seattle hernia center experience was positive, even though I was extremely nervous. The nurses before during and after were comforting. The anesthesiologist really helped me relax. And the surgery went really well. I highly recommend Dr Yates if you have anxiety about the surgery. He is a true professional. Open surgery at UW worked for me!

The opportunity to provide surgical care to patients is a true privilege. Patients and their families place a tremendous amount of faith and trust in their surgeon, and I take that responsibility very seriously. I believe that patients do not simply have a disease that needs treatment; rather, each person has a unique set of clinical and social factors that shape the goals and expectations for their surgical care. I strive to understand these factors for each patient and, whenever possible, develop and implement a treatment plan that is congruent with their goals and expectations. I encourage patients to ask questions and be active participants in their clinical decision-making process. It is particularly important to me that each patient fully understands, and has confidence in, the treatment plan that we have developed. Ultimately, it is my goal to ensure that each patient receives with the safest, most effective, and least invasive treatment to provide the best outcome possible.
