When my 15 month old son was diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus, I was told that a VP shunt was his only option. I spoke with two neurosurgeons and was a bit uncomfortable with their explanations and surgical plans, so I reached out to a friend who is a pediatric neurosurgeon for her guidance. I said I would travel anywhere in the world and asked who the best surgeon was for this condition. She told me to see Dr. Mahaney. It was night and day compared to my other consultations. She was able to explain to me the risks and benefits of both surgical approaches, why the other surgeons were uncomfortable offering them, and we agreed upon a treatment plan together. Her empathy, compassion, and support were invaluable when making this challenging decision for my son. Ultimately, he underwent an endoscopic third ventriculostomy (which I was told was impossible given my son’s anatomy, and that it would not work per the first two surgeons). She executed the surgically perfectly and my son is thriving. Dr. Mahaney has the surgical skills to perform more challenging approaches and provides personalized and compassionate care. As an otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon, I have collaborated with many neurosurgeons and I can say that she is truly outstanding.
