About Me

Care Philosophy
  • I understand the anxiety and worry that comes with having spinal problems. The mere mention of “I’m sending you to a back surgeon” creates concern for both patients and family members. Most of us have had a family member or know someone close to us who has suffered from spinal conditions. While I am a primarily a surgeon, surgery itself is not always the best treatment for each patient. The key to proper care is diagnosis of the problem. Spinal problems are especially complex. Sometimes even with the most thorough work-up the cause of pain remains unclear. But that does not mean we should not evaluate each patient to the fullest and as an individual. My philosophy is to gather as much information as necessary for each patient to give them the best diagnosis and treatment options currently available. The phrase “surgery is the last resort” is often heard from patients but sometimes surgery is the first and best option. That is not common but in cases of neurologic compromise surgery may be the most conservative care to preserve function. In my opinion chronic pain medications are the “last resort” in spinal care. The majority of patients prefer return to function to medicating the problem. It is my goal to provide each patient with a thorough evaluation and treatment plan that is appropriate for the care of his or her condition.

What’s a board certification and why is it important that my provider has one?

A board certification represents a provider’s dedication to ongoing training in one or more specialties, including the completion of intensive exams. While not all specialties have board certifications, if your provider does have one they’ve taken the extra step to master their specialty and to keep up with the latest advancements in their field.
