About Me
- Anna Alperovich, MD, is a hematologist-oncologist at the Monter Cancer Center and at North Shore University Hospital, where she cares for patients with blood cancers, including multiple myeloma, lymphoma and leukemia. She also treats a variety of bone marrow conditions that cause low blood counts. Her specialty is performing bone marrow transplant with either autologous stem cells—in which immature, healthy cells are taken from the patient and given back after chemotherapy—or allogeneic stem cells, which come from a genetically matched donor. She also uses chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, an innovative treatment in which immune system cells called T-cells are altered in a lab and re-infused into the patient to fight blood cancer. Her aim is to provide compassionate, evidence-based care. “I spend a lot of time to talking with patients and families about the condition, what the treatment involves, and what to expect,†she says. “This improves both the patient’s experience and their outcome.†Dr. Alperovich earned her medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine residency at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. She was fellowship trained in hematology/oncology at Maimonides Medical Center, and in bone marrow transplantation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. A successful bone marrow transplant takes an entire team of providers. At Northwell Health, Dr. Alperovich works with pathologists, radiation oncologists, lab technicians, physician assistants, social workers, and nurse coordinators to create and implement treatment plans. “We work as a team to help you through your toughest days and we are constantly striving to improve care,†she says. Dr. Alperovich is an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and a member of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy. She has published numerous research articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, with a focus on hematologic malignancies. She is a recipient of an American Society of Hematology abstract achievement award and is fluent in both English and Russian. The most rewarding part of Dr. Alperovich’s job is supporting her patients throughout the treatment process. “I want to help them get through this vulnerable time in their life, while offering my expertise and humanity,†she says.
