What Tools Can We Use to Diagnosis Concussion?
After you have a concussion, fluid leaks out of the brain. In this video, Walter J. Koroshetz, MD, director of the NINDS, discusses why this happens and which medical tools are used to spot this injury.
Transcript
One thing that happens in concussion is that the blood-brain barrier breaks down, things leak out.
So there are dyes that are used commonly in people. Gadolinium, for instance, is a dye
that's used with MRI scanning to give contrast to the scans. And they're looking at the leakage of that dye.
And they're seeing that actually in concussions. Probably about-- of the ones that go to the hospital, they are seeing it in maybe about 40% of cases.
So it's a very subtle leakage of dye on the surface-- actually, the coverings of the brain over the surface of the brain.
