The Jewish holiday of Passover (Pesach) began last Friday. While we’re not very strict about following customs in our house, I do clear out all the leavened bread in our household and I only eat matzah for the eight days that the holiday lasts.

When I was younger, I found this restriction to be annoying. I mean, if I couldn’t have bread, cereal, pasta or pizza, what could I eat? I viewed it as a real limitation and would often break the rules before the end of the holiday, simply because I was hungry and sick of eating matzah. But then a college friend helped me change my attitude. I saw him eating a salad during Passover and commended him on his healthy choice. He said that he always looked forward to the holiday because it helped him focus on eating more fruits and vegetables. Well, now that was a good idea!

I definitely do still enjoy all those leavened bread products, but I now look forward to the opportunity to replace some of them with extra servings of fruit and veggies. I enjoy matzah, but if you’ve ever had it you’ll understand what I mean when I say I can only eat so much of it!

Whether you’re dealing with a food allergy or intolerance or have had to cut back on a favorite food due to a medical reason, here’s to trying different things that might just become new favorites.

Yours in health,
