Bio

Member of STTI since June 2011. Currently working as a Clinical Supervisor in a home health company. This is a new endeavor that begain February 2012. I get to spend a little time with patients and a little time in the office. I truly enjoy this line of work. I get to continue working at educating my patients and their families, along with educating our staff. I still am a PRN nursing instructor for a ADN nursing program at a local community college. My ultimate goal is to teach full-time from home in an online environment. I plan to go back to obtain my PhD in Nursing Education, but may take a detour and take a specialization course in Nursing Informatics as I have truly begun to enjoy work on the computer.

Why does poor care occur in nursing homes and assisted living facilities?

I have not worked in a nursing home in almost 10 years, but have recently been teaching nursing students over the course of 8 months in 3 different nursing homes. From what I have seen, there are multiple factors in why poor care is given.

First, the majority of nurses I have met in these facilities

Mary Vokurka has posted a blog entry: New Nursing Instructor
I am a new nursing instructor, mostly teaching clinicals. I love being in the active part of nursing, teaching students the techniques and skills that will benefit them on the floor as a new nurse, but I will admit that sometimes I find it hard to teach what I know as compared to what the student...Full Post
