Marcia Starkman

Bio

Hello! I'm Marcia Starkman, M.S.N., R.N., PMHCNS-BC. I am a board certified Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist in private practice. I was formerly the Director of Nursing at Bayview Mental Health Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am also very active in nursing education at a large Florida state hospital and mentor and supervise nurses at many different stages in their careers. I believe in and model caring in everything I do personally and professionally.

I have been a psychiatric nurse for more than 30 years, and have worked in a variety of inpatient and outpatient behavioral health settings in the U.S. and Canada. I am an advanced practice, master’s level, adult psychiatric mental health nurse. My private practice is in Hallandale Beach, Florida and I specialize in women's and travelers' mental health issues. I have a particular interest in women's reproductive mental health, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and eating disorders. I offer individual, couple, and group therapy.

I have more than twenty five years experience (as an early pioneer) using the internet for mental health counseling and support. I offer telephone, online live, e-mail, and face-to-face sessions. Distance is no obstacle. I have been an expert consultant on postpartum depression and women's issues on many other popular websites.

I view self exploration as a positive, growthful experience that can benefit anyone who wants to understand themselves and their behavior. Engaging in therapy is the ultimate positive effort to do so. Taking the first step can be frightening, but is well worth it.

Please feel free to contact me with your questions and concerns. All the best!

How can I cope with postpartum depression?

Coping is the operative word here!

Almost everyone involved with helping support women with postpartum depression (PPD) have three key sentences of advice that they immediately offer:

    "You are not alone."

    "It is not your fault."

    "You will get better."

The first way to cope is to memorize those three

My sister and I talk about pets and grief.

I gave up on having any more furry friends several years ago, after the tragic death of my cat, a beautiful and intelligent Siamese. I am still "not over" his demise. I miss him so much, that it still generates an almost physical reaction in my gut. So, I have

How can I help my child be accountable for his actions?

One way to help your child become accountable for his actions is to be the best role model you can be. Are you responsible and accountable for your actions? Are you honest in your day to day dealings with others? For example, if you're in a store with your child and the cashier gives you too much change,

Why do the holidays make me depressed?
The holidays are the time to erase the "shoulds" from your life. Think about the messages we are bombarded with from as far back as the day before Halloween! We should be happy, we should have money, we should spend this money, we should be part of a large, loving family gathered in a beautifully...  Full Post

    How can I be happy?

Surround yourself with positives and happiness. If your environment is grim and the people surrounding you are negative and defeatist, it can be hard to feel happy. So, to feel better biologically, improve your eating habits, sleep well, and get as much sunlight as you can. Get moving, even when you don't
