Carter Brown

Bio

Dr. Brown has been a member of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) since 1985. As South Carolina AGD’s Secretary /Treasurer, he restructured the governance, developed written policies, and hired the first Executive Secretary to handle the business of the association. He was the SCAGD PACE approval officer and web master. Regionally he was Editor, Delegate, and vice chair and currently is Region 19 Trustee. Dr. Brown has had multiple publications in AGD Impact, served on the Communications Council, and was a presenter at Leadership Conference.

Dr. Brown is an author of the AGD White Paper on Access, testified before CODA on Workforce issues, represented AGD’s issues at the ADA, served on the 4 on 4 AGD /ADA Trustee summits, was on the steering committee for the AGD outreach project in New Orleans, and was nominated for the “Humanitarian of the Year” award in 2005 for work with Katrina victims.

He has served as a Board Liaison to the Councils on Dental Benefits, Web Use and Technology, and Legislative and Governmental Affairs. Dr. Brown is a member of the AGD Image Task Force, The Outreach Task Force, the Task Force on Council Structure, and the Advocacy Fund committee.

He has been on the AGD Compensation Committee since it started and is a consultant for the Task Force on International Membership. He was the Chair of the Election Guidelines Task Force, served on the Professional RelationsCommittee for two years and the Budget and Finance Committee for one year.

Dr. Brown is the current Chair for the Professional Relations Committee and the current Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee.

Dr. Brown was adjunct Faculty for the Medical University of South Carolina in the Restorative Department and is current faculty for Community Based Learning. He created a rotation for the senior dental students at a technical school where the students provide comprehensive care at no charge and learn the importance of compassion and care for all. He has worked with the dental school to create a new AEGD program. The fifth floor at the new dental school is dedicated to the program, is named for Dr. Brown and his wife Katie and per Dr. Brown, features the AGD logo prominently.

Dr. Brown was President of the SCDA, won the Sam Harris award for chair of the best Children’s Dental Health Month in the country, and helped start a rural practice incentive payback plan. He created and chaired the first two Dental Access Days MOM projects and received the Meritorious Achievement award from the SCDA. He is currently the Vice Chair of the ADA Council on Communications and was liaison to the Council on Scientific Affairs.

Dr. Brown is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He received the “Dentist of the Year” award from the PFA last year.

Locally, Dr. Brown has chaired the United Way, was the pro bono dentist forShriner’s Hospital, volunteer hospital staff for 20 years, on the board for the American Cancer Society, has awards from AHEC and the American Fund forDental Health for community work, and has an in office pre dental rotation for college juniors.
