Bio

Hey! I'm soon to be 43 years old, happily married for 20 years and I have two sons, age 18 and 16. I have recently joined sharecare because I signed up to do Dr. Oz's transformation nation. I'm shocking myself a little bit that I'm going to do this.  I've been working on getting healthy for a year now with a personal trainer and have lost 25 lbs and I feel better but I have a lot more to do to get me to my goal. Something about this(maybe the million dollar prize!) has gotten my attention so I'm going to give it my best shot. My ultimate goal is to be in the best shape possible as I creep closer to my mid 40's. I want to feel better, look better and live the best life possible in a healthy body! I've posted a profile picture that prompted me to seek a personal trainer. This was taken at a fundraising event for a friend with cancer and I won a 1 year membership to a local gym in a raffle. I really didn't plan to use it UNTIL I saw this picture and realized how much weight I had gained. Not sleeping well, drinking alcohol, eating fast food and no exercise had brought me to this. I needed help. I went to the gym, ask for a personal trainer and started my journey to a healthier me. I will use this picture each time I sign on here as a reminder to not get to this point again. I had no idea I was fat. As crazy as that sounds  it is true. I think there was some divine intervention going on that day and there was a reason I won that free gym membership. I was there to support and help a friend in need and I walked away with a way to save my own life as well.

Amy Garrow has posted a blog entry: Group workout

Started a group workout this morning with my trainer and it was so much fun! I normally workout alone but suggested to Thor that we should try getting a group of friends together to workout on Saturdays, thinking it would change things up for me, get my friends involved and hey, who doesn't love some good

I think you should just do it! if anything you will have a base for your time and distance for the next 5k. and don't be afraid of the doorjam bar, i've been using mine for 3 years now and it's great. I hope that link helps you, if anything as a good place to start. I look forward to your progress and 5k results! ;)

Hi Amy, nice to meet you. I like your resolve...keep up the hard work with your trainer!

Good for you on the Spartan Sprint!! Thats definitely ALL in! I am still working with my trainer. He does in home training, so he comes to my house. I have a pull up bar and he's told me some things to do with my son's pull up bar but its in the door frame and that scares me a little bit. We do alot of upper body working out though, so I know I'm getting stronger. Maybe with the weight loss I will eventually be able to pull myself up. I will check out the link you gave me. Thanks so much and congrats again on the 5K. I need to just do it and check that off my list.

Those are AWESOME goals! My goal this year was to run a 5k too, and i did it - well sort of.. I did the Spartan Sprint which was a 5k obstacle course on a ski resort.. lol nothing like going ALL IN! Just sign up for one and make that a target goal! you will do awesome!! Pull ups a a bid difficult, especially for us ladies, but like you said - it is possible. I have a blog post that might help you with the pull-ups http://www.sharecare.com/user/tara-finch/blogs/show/pull-ups-its-ok-to-be-negative are you still with the trainer at the gym?

Thanks for the support Tara! My goal is to lose 40 lbs. I would love to be able to do pull ups. I'm not even close....but when I started working out a year ago I couldn't do a push up but now I can do many. So its possible, I just have to keep working at it. I would love to run a marathon. I can walk/run 3 miles now in about 45 minutes but I don't consistently run to build up my endurance. I would like to do a 5K before the end of the year. Just haven't gotten the nerve up yet to try it.

Keep at it Kathleen! Sounds like you have a great place to get in some exercise. I bet you will suprise yourself at how quickly you're able to meet that goal of walking without stopping. I believe that if you take your time and figure out what works best for you and what you're comfortable with then you'll stick with it longer. If you just jumped in and tried to overdo it then you would burn yourself out and never go to that park for a walk again! Enjoy your walk this weekend!
