Make sure you find out whether or not your current health insurance coverage will apply before you travel outside the U.S. In some cases, you may be required to pay in cash at the time of service.  If your policy does not cover you when you travel abroad, you may want to consider purchasing a separate policy like Visitors Travel Medical Insurance for your trip.

Health insurance coverage while traveling aboard is available. This sort of coverage is dependent on your plan. To find out what type of coverage you have it is best to contact your insurance company customer service unit prior to any travel. Coverage may include expenses for medications, doctors’ visits and hospitalizations.

In some countries, you may be asked to pay for medical expenses and seek reimbursement from your insurance company even though you have insurance coverage.

Also be sure to inquire about the coverage of costs to transport you back home should you become hospitalized. These expenses may not be routinely covered.

If your plan does not cover health care expenses aboard, there are several companies that offer travel medical insurance. These plans can be purchased for short periods of time.

If you are traveling for business it may be advisable to contact your corporate human resources office to inquire about coverage of health care expenses during your business trip.
