Dr. Marina Johnson answered:The appropriate use of HRT is for postmenopausal women. PCOS is an endocrine disorder that occurs in premenopausal women. It often begins in the teen years and can persist throughout a woman’s reproductive years. A young woman’s ovaries are capable of making adequate estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. The goal in treating PCOS is to correct the underlying endocrine imbalance to restore normal hormone production. After menopause, HRT is provided because a woman’s ovaries are no longer able to make estrogen or progesterone.
