By training specific muscle groups at varying levels of intensity, you can actually get your muscles to take on new shapes and forms. Guys generally go for the bigger is better ideal, whereas women tend to want firm, toned, lean muscles. In either case, you'll need to strength train -- meaning you need to have moderate resistance -- if you want to change the shape of your body. Training with resistance means that you are applying some added weight (add more weight to build larger muscles) to your muscles so that they have to strain to lift that weight. Essentially, when you weight lift you are creating tiny tears in your muscle tissues. Those tears heal (provided you get enough protein in your diet, drink plenty of water, and sleep) and make your muscles stronger and firmer. If you do lots of repetitions with low resistance, you'll get firm, lean, toned muscles, because you are only tearing them a little bit, whereas, if you do a moderate number of repetitions with a very heavy resistance, you'll get larger muscles.
