The diagnosis and management of epilepsy is the subject of a large amount of research time, effort and money. The development of new medications for the treatment of epilepsy is a very expensive and time consuming process. The development of a new drug for treating the various kinds of seizures may take many years and numerous clinical studies and trials before it is presented to the FDA for approval. I suspect that funding of this condition is comparable to other neurological conditions, but progress is sometimes slow and cumbersome.
