Hearing loss blocks the different cues that are necessary to perform activities of daily living (ADL) such a cooking, daily hygiene, dressing, and interacting socially with those around you. When hearing loss is bad enough to cause speech difficulty, then hearing loss becomes a stumbling block in obtaining gainful employment and in having meaningful relationships. Hearing loss can be life-threatening when someone can no longer respond to the sound of a smoke alarm at home or does not hear the siren of an ambulance when driving. In addition, hearing loss has a tremendous emotional effect on people, causing symptoms of anxiety, depression, fear, isolation, paranoia, and even anger. When a person’s hearing loss continues for months to years without adequate medical treatment, the societal burden increases.
