Why do I have to give up red meat to have a healthy diet?

Lona Sandon of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics answered:You do not have to give up red meat to have a healthy diet. In fact, red meat can be a nutritional powerhouse. It is packed with protein, iron, zinc, and many B vitamins. To include red meat in a healthy diet, follow these tips:
1. Choose only lean red meats. Cuts with the word loin in it tend to be leaner. Look for cuts with less marbling.
2. Keep portions small. Three ounces cooked is just the right size. Make your meat the side dish rather than the focus of the meal.
3. Mix and match your meats. Keep red meats to 2 times per week and choose other meat like fish or poultry on other days. Or even go a day with no meat at all.
4. Avoid charred red meats. Charring increases the level of cancer causing compounds. Using a marinade may help prevent charring and keep your meats healthier.
5. Pass on cured meats of any kind.

Doreen Rodo answered:Red meats do not have to be completely avoided in a healthy diet, but be careful what types you choose. Lean red meats include: tenderloin, top loin, center loin and eye of the round-less marbling is best; Choose ground beef that is 10-15% fat, but substitute lean ground turkey or chicken when making sloppy joes or tacos.
