    Stacy Wiegman answered:
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is a method of feeding adults and children when they can't get nutrition on their own. A doctor will prescribe TPN if an illness or condition, such as stomach damage or coma, makes a person unable to eat normally. TPN provides nutrients through a liquid solution that is delivered through an IV (intravenous) needle into the vein.
