Many studies have shown that ICS are by far the most effective medicines for controlling long-lasting asthma. ICS may prevent lung damage from untreated asthma. Children with asthma who use ICS have a better quality of life, fewer symptoms, better school attendance, and less need for long stays in the hospital. They also have less need for corticosteroids taken by mouth (like prednisone).
