If you are unsure of the meal options available to you at your school I strongly encourage you to bring your own bag lunch to school. Or if you have a child that is very fussy about food likes and dislikes better meal consumption may be with a bag lunch from home. But, do check out what your school has to offer students at mealtime. Many schools offer a healthy breakfast that is, quick and affordable in addition to a nutritious hot and or cold lunch. Schools that participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs are held to strict guidelines for the meals they serve and the portion sizes and nutrient content are both kid friendly and age appropriate and typically very affordable. Or for those in financial need they can complete an application for reduced price or even free meals at school. Keep in mind that children are more prepared for school and ready to learn when good nutrition is inplay, and that starts with breakfast each day followed by a nutritious lunch.

There are several reasons for packing a bag lunch for school:

    • You have control over the type and quality of the foods your child is eating.
    • You ensure that your child has foods they actually like, and will eat.
    • Many lunch breaks are quite short. If your child’s a slow eater, this ensures they spend their break eating rather than waiting in line.
    • In addition to the answer above, you know that the money you’ve spent has gone to food they’ve eaten rather than food thrown away.
    • If your child doesn’t eat their whole lunch, they can easily save it for recess or an afternoon snack.
    • Whatever they don’t eat, they can take home, so you have a much better understanding of what your child is and is not eating throughout the day.

Bagging a bag lunch will not only save time but also avoid overeating. Waiting on line in a local deli or fast-food eatery is a waste of your valuable lunch hour.

Also, a recent study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) showed that women who ate out at lunch at least weekly lost almost 5 fewer pounds, on average, than those who didn’t. This mirrors other studies that show that dining out frequently is associated with a higher body weight.

Bag a healthy lunch daily for the sake of your schedule and your waist.
