A hysterectomy may be the only choice if a woman has cancer of the uterus, ovary, cervix, or endometrium. But most hysterectomies are performed for non-cancerous conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, and uterine prolapse.

    Dr. John Lipman answered:
The most common reason why hysterectomies are performed are uterine fibroids which are benign, non-cancerous tumors. It is important for women with symptomatic fibroids to know they do not need to undergo hysterectomy. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) performed by Interventional Radiologists (IRs) can treat all of the symptoms from fibroids, allow the woman to avoid surgery, and keep her uterus. If a woman has uterine cancer, hysterectomy is the appropriate method of treatment.

    Dr. Marina Johnson answered:

Hysterectomy can be lifesaving especially in women with cervical, uterine or ovarian cancer. However, the most common reason for having a hysterectomy is heavy bleeding from a totally benign condition called fibroids. Women should seek out help for heavy bleeding when it first starts. With early intervention, women can often treat the heavy bleeding medically with progesterone or with less invasive procedures like endometrial ablation.
