    Stacy Wiegman answered:
Certain people should not take sodium fluoride because of an increased risk of harmful side effects. If you are allergic to sodium fluoride or any of its ingredients, you should not take sodium fluoride. If your water source already contains enough fluoride (greater than 0.6 parts per million), you should not take sodium fluoride tablets. Also, if you have severe kidney problems, ulcers, or joint pain, you should talk to your doctor before using any form of sodium fluoride. Sodium fluoride toothpaste or gel is not recommended for children under six years of age unless specifically directed by a doctor or dentist, and children should be carefully monitored while using the product.

You should not take sodium fluoride if you are allergic to it, or if your drinking water has 0.6 parts fluoride per million. Sodium fluoride is found in most drinking water and helps prevent cavities. If you don't get enough fluoride in your drinking water, you can use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash or add sodium fluoride to your diet.
