Optison contains material made from blood products and should not be taken by anyone allergic to blood products or albumin. Optison may not be useful for anyone with a cardiac shunt, a congenital heart defect or liver problems. This medication has not been well-studied in children or older adults. No information is available on the specific effects this medication could have on these age groups. Optison's effects on an unborn baby when taken by a pregnant woman are not known. It is unclear if this medication can pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby.
