Who should not take Lexapro?

Individuals who are taking MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), citalopram (a medication similar to Lexapro), escitalopram or pimozide (an antipsychotic drug) should not take Lexapro. Those who have had allergic reactions to Lexapro, citalopram or any of their ingredients need to avoid using Lexapro. When combined with certain other medications, Lexapro can cause serotonin syndrome or neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Do not take Lexapro with lithium, St. John's Wort, tryptophan, linezolid or certain migraine and pain medications. This medication does pass through breast milk and is not recommended for nursing mothers.
