People who are more at risk for tooth decay, which is the most common cause of a toothache, include:
    • People with diabetes. Diabetes often leads to high levels of sugar in the bloodstream, which bacteria within the mouth thrive on. It's also linked to dry mouth, which means there is less saliva to wash away decay-causing bacteria and plaque.
    • People with eating disorders. Some eating disorders involve vomiting, and the stomach acid that comes up when vomiting can erode tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay.
    • People with heartburn. Similar to the situation with eating disorders, the stomach acid that is regurgitated because of heartburn, or acid reflux disease, can destroy the enamel layer of teeth, which can lead to tooth decay and toothaches.
    • People who smoke or use smokeless tobacco. Research has found that tobacco use, whether through cigarettes or smokeless tobacco, increases your risk for tooth decay and therefore the risk for toothaches.
Other people at higher risk for toothaches include people getting chemotherapy and/or radiation for cancer, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS.
