  2. Dr. Theodore A Monitz

Cardiac catheterization and other cardiac interventional procedures such as stents are preformed by specially trained cardiovascular invasive physicians and a team of cardiovascular specialists including nurses, cardiology fellows in training, and technicians. These physicians generally have extra training in invasive procedures beyond general cardiology training in their fellowships. Diagnostic cardiac catheterization generally takes between 15 and 30 minutes and involves injection of radiographic contrast material ("dye") through a large vein in either the groin or the arm to evaluate the status of the patient's coronary arteries with regard to blockage, congenital anomalies, and amount of heart muscle that may be at risk. Pressure measurements are also made through these catheters. This can determine if the patient has other conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, pericardial disease, or disease of the heart muscle itself.
