    Dr. Michael Roizen answered:

You are eligible for Medicare if you are 65 or over, severely disabled, or have kidney failure requiring dialysis.

Most people do not have to pay a premium for Part A (hospital insurance), but everyone must pay a premium for Part B (Medicare insurance). The monthly premium is deducted from your Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Civil Service Retirement check.

For questions about your eligibility for Medicare Part A or Part B, call the Social Security Administration.

If you are 65 or older or have a disability, you are eligible for Medicare. Also, people who require dialysis or a transplant because of permanent kidney failure are eligible for Medicare. You are eligible for Medicare Part A with no premium if you are age 65 or older and you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. You may be eligible for Medicare Part A with no premiums when you turn 65 if you are receiving retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB).
