Botox and Dysport act by relaxing muscles so they are used primarily for lines or wrinkles that come from the movement of muscles.  Dermatologists call this type of wrinkle a dynamic wrinkle. Some examples of dynamic wrinkles include forhead lines, frown lines and crow's feet. When the muscles are relaxed the dynamic wrinkle will soften and in some cases disappear completely.  Botox and Dysport are also useful for anyone who want to prevent wrinkles. I always tell patients when the wrinkle is too far gone then Botox and Dysport may not be effective. The other use for these products is in the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).  By blocking the nerves that turn on the sweat glands injections of Botox are an excellent way to stop excessive sweating.

Anyone who is bothered by fine lines or wrinkles is a perfect candidate, but botulinum toxins have other off-label uses. They've been shown to be a good treatment for migraine headaches and also block receptors in the sweat glands (so shots under the arm decrease perspiration). Many dermatologists use this drug to manipulate the shape of the face slightly too. A touch of Botox at the base of the nose gives it a more turned-up appearance, and an injection at the upper lip can bring it down slightly and minimize a gummy smile.
