    Sugar itself is not corrosive to the enamel. The bacteria in dental plaque metabolize sugar and release acid that can break down tooth enamel. Sugar substitutes (like low calorie sweeteners) don’t have the same effect. In fact some sweeteners are actually antibacterial.
