Pediatric hydrocephalus is the accumulation of spinal fluid inside your child's brain. It is also known as "water on the brain." This can be a very dangerous condition since the normal production and recycling of spinal fluid throughout your child's neurological system is disrupted.

Your child's treatment will probably be handled by a group of doctors from various specialty areas working together. Teams to treat pediatric hydrocephalus at Johns Hopkins typically include:

    • Neurosurgeons
    • Neurologists
    • Pediatric ophthalmologists
    • Radiologists

Together, this team will develop a treatment plan catered to the needs of each patient.

Neurologists and neurosurgeons treat hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus, commonly referred to as "water on the brain" is the result of cerebrospinal fluid buildup or obstruction. Cerebrospinal fluid accumulation can increase pressure and cause mental, behavioral, and physical changes. Neurologists can diagnose and medically treat hydrocephalus. If there obstruction by a tumor or brain swelling, neurosurgeons may insert a ventriculoperitoneal shunt that will divert excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain into the abdomen or chest. This will decrease intracranial pressure. The primary cause of hydrocephalus will necessitate a referral to a pediatric neurologist and/or pediatric neurosurgeon.
