Varicose veins most commonly occur in areas of low venous flow. When a vein is occluded, return flow is blocked and an increase in pressure within the vein occurs. This results in edema, or swelling. Most often, this will occur in the lower extremities. Rare locations of involvement may be indicitive of systemic illnesses such as those found on the abdomen in liver disease.
