If you have been sexually assaulted, you can get help from local services that should listed in the 'phone book', printed or electronic. There will likely be a rape crisis line, an abused women's center or shelter or public health unit who will be glad to provide service or make a referral.

You may also chose to report the incident to someone you trust first and have them come with you for support. Tell Mom, another family member or close friend you confide in. You can approach your minister, priest, rabbi, etc. Tell a trusted teacher or school counselor. A leader in a youth organization you attend such Boy Scouts, etc.

If this is a work-related circumstance, consult your company policies for the proper way to handle reporting the situation. If the company is too small to have a Personnel Department, call the appropriate government department for guidance.

Whatever the circumstances, tell someone. Even if you do not choose to follow through any further, sharing the burden is better than keeping it to yourself.

Women and men who have been sexually assaulted have an excellent resource in their local rape crisis center. There is an advocate on call 24 hours a day. Generally speaking reporting to the hospital as soon after the assault as possible is preferred even if you do not want the police involved in your case.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are available in many communities to help the patient to understand what their treatment options are and to make an effective safety plan. Reporting to the hospital sooner than later is important, as HIV prophylaxis and pregnancy prophylaxis is more effective if began as soon after the assault as possible. And in fact these options have a time frame for administration that must be adhered to.

Also any potential evidence is affected by the passage of time. It is important if you can not to urinate until you are assessed by the SANE examiner and do not eat, drink or smoke if at all possible. Do not change your clothes or wash your body, but if you do bring your clothes with you to the hospital.
