Brushing is the cornerstone of any good oral hygiene routine. You should always brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth once a day with floss or another interdental cleaner. Other good oral health habits include replacing your toothbrush every three or four months eating a balanced diet and limiting between-meal snacks, and scheduling regular dental check-ups.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you brush your teeth twice daily with an ADA-accepted toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. It has been recommended that you do not brush your teeth immediately after acidic meals. This is because the acidity of the meal has temporarily softened your enamel and requires some time to reharden. If you brush while your enamel is soft, you will cause more wear on your teeth. Instead, you should wait anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes to brush with a fluoride toothpaste.

The proper tooth brushing technique is to place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums. Move the brush back and forth gently in short (tooth-wide) strokes. Brush the outer tooth surfaces, the inner tooth surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Use the toe of the brush to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, using a gentle up-and-down stroke. Also, brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
