It is recommended that children drink breast milk at least the first year of life, but can be continued past the first year. Typically cow’s based milk is not recommended until after the child’s first birthday. When switching to cow’s based milk, kids should drink whole milk until 2 years of age because whole milk provides the fat needed for growth and development. After 2 years of age if growth is adequate, it is safe to switch to low-fat or skim milk.
