    Dr. Doris Day answered:
Use sunscreen every day. Rain or shine, cloudy or sunny, winter or summer, wear sunscreen without fail. Choose a product with a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15. The SPF applies only to UVB protection so make sure you choose a product that not only blocks UVB but also UVA. UVA rays are not as dangerous as UVB, but they still pose a risk. Check the label for ingredients. Zinc and titanium dioxide are the most effective physical sunscreens. If you’re going to be outdoors for any length of time, particularly at the beach or on the ski slopes, apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours.

Use one of those new UV detectors to help you decide whether you need sunscreen. Or check your local TV station; if the UV index is 2 or under, apply at least a 15 SPF sunscreen, and if it is over 5, use a 30 SPF if you are going to be in the sun more than 20 minutes.

Sunscreen is most needed between March and November but should be used year-round. It is most needed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and should be applied 30 minutes before going outside. The higher the SPF rating, the better.

You should use sunscreen every day that you go outside. Some moisturizers and foundations even have sunscreen in them. For going to and from work, SPF15 should be enough. If you plan to spend time outside, make sure to use SPF30 in a cream or lotion form. The sprays easily lend themselves to uneven coverage, especially if it is windy outside. If you are swimming, reapply the sunscreen after getting out of the water or at least every 2-3 hours.
